Can any of you kind people save us with a recommendation for an alternative hotel?

I wouldn%26#39;t call it a recommendation as we haven%26#39;t actually been there yet, but the reviews on this site are fairly positive but we%26#39;ve booked 5 nights in a studio apartment room at the Envoy Club for just over 锟斤拷500 (don%26#39;t know if this is more or less than the Pennsylvania). You get a large room with a kitchen and bathroom. It%26#39;s not super central (East 33rd Street between 1st and 2nd ave) but it%26#39;s cheap and the rooms look good. They have a website you can find through Google.

Sorry didn%26#39;t realise the pound sign wouldn%26#39;t work - 500 pounds!

I have stayed at the Pensylvannia once before and am staying there again in 3 weeks.

It is not the BEST in manhattan but the location is fantastic - the room I had was clean, although I did have to change rooms once (as the first was not renovated and was shabby)

To be honest, if you go to NY to spend a lot of time in your room - you are in the wrong city!

This time around I have written to the hotel and asked for one of the newly renovated rooms - hopefully it%26#39;ll be ok!

Hope you have a great time - Enjoy NYC!

Any particular reason you%26#39;ve chosen that area to stay in? It%26#39;s across from Penn Station / Madison Square Garden -- a pretty dirty area with lots of fast food places, but it%26#39;s generally ugly and not very nice to explore at night. The best place to stay is a residential area with good transit access, like the Upper West Side or the Village. Most tourists stay in the Times Square / Theater District, which is wall-to-wall tourists. Still, it%26#39;s certainly nicer than the West 30s.

I%26#39;ve stayed in multiple hotels across Manhattan -- upper west side, Financial district, Greenwich Village, Midtown, and yes, a long while back, at the Pennsylvania. I found it to be noisy and the rooms small. My current favorite place to stay is at the Inn on 23rd, which is a B%26amp;B on West 23rd, between 6th and 7th. Clean rooms and good size (all with private baths), free continental breakfast, quiet if you get a room toward the back of the building, and very convenient. It%26#39;s on the edge of the Chelsea area, which has great dining and shopping, and not far at all from where you%26#39;re staying. I consider it my home away from home in NYC. Take a look at the web site -- Innon23rd.com. The only thing you don%26#39;t get here that you%26#39;d get at a hotel is room service.

the only reason to stay in the Hotel Penn is if you%26#39;re staying there for nothing. During the day, the area is like Khartoum--noisy, crowded, not pretty, Madison Square Garden ticket hustlers, commuters coming and going, lousy fast food places, taxis galore, YUCH! The Affinia Dumont is on 34th St--a very nice place bit off the beaten path but near a nice neighborhood--Murray Hill--with lots of cozy restaurants, non-touristy shops, etc. You can then cab it up to the theater district and downtown to Sout St. Seaport, Wall St, Greenwich Village.

Try the Hilton New York...great location.

Don%26#39;t know if you still need some advice LeeMonkey.

A friend of mine has just come back from staying at the Pennsylvania (10th-13th Feb). She found out about tripadvisor after booking the hotel and was worried about all reviews. They made special requests to their Tour Operator for a renovated room. Unfortunately they didn%26#39;t get a renovated room, so be prepared to get a standard room. However she said the bathroom was clean, but the room could of definitely done with a lick of paint.

Are you still looking for alternatives hotels? I%26#39;ve spent many hours reading the reviews on this website trying to decide which hotel to book for my trip in March, so many to choose from and I couldn%26#39;t leave it until my friend got back to see if the Pennsylvania was any good.

The Affina Dumont as recommended by the geohab is a really nice hotel (some friends stay there a couple of years ago), double the price of the Pennsylvania so you will be paying for a nice hotel. If like me you were looking for a cheaper hotel so you have more money to spend on shopping (can%26#39;t wait!!!) maybe consider the one we%26#39;ve opted for. The Grand Union hotel 34 East on 32nd Street, it has some really good reviews on this website and is roughly the same sort of price as the Penn (just hope it is as nice as everyone says). There is a post on the forum from 15th Feb %26#39;Trip Report%26#39; by %26#39;manchestershopaholic%26#39; who said they would recommend staying there.

Should I really be recommending somewhere I haven%26#39;t even stayed yet, I%26#39;m just trusting the reviews posted. I%26#39;m sure the shopping and sights will outweigh the disappointment of any hotel.

I%26#39;d go for the Skyline on 50th and 10th. Very good locations, nice rooms and an indoor pool on the top floor that provides priceless views of the city - amazing at night.

Thankyou to you all. We have booked the Affinia Dumont. Which was a stroke of luck considering at was only a weeks notice.

This forum has been so helpful. What did people do before the internet?

Many thanks again.
