Short break from NYC-any suggestions?

Middle aged English couple in USA for 2 weeks April. Staying in Greenwich Village first week, would like suggestions of where of interest to fly to cheaply for few days of second week.

Short break from NYC-any suggestions?

Without knowing your interests, it%26#39;s hard to advise, but I will list a few possibilities.

Boston. A wonderful city. Lots of history. Good food. Plenty of exploration opportunities. Perhaps a day trip to Cape Cod if you want to rent a car.

Washington, D.C. Excellent city for tourists. You can see where Americans%26#39; tax dollars go. Numerous sightseeing opportunities including White House, FBI and Congress tours, Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institute, Holocaust Museum. Lots of tours available.

New Orleans. April is a great time to be here. Weather is perfect and Jazz %26amp; Heritage Festival is going on. If you like live music and great, great food, New Orleans is a must visit this time of year.

Las Vegas. Yes, it%26#39;s far away, but in the U.S. you can often get airline fares for longer distances cheaper than fares between cities that are much closer together. And everybody%26#39;s got to see Vegas. However, April is a heavy convention month so hotel prices may be a bit up.

Short break from NYC-any suggestions?

Or, you can try Atlantic City, not that far from NYC. Nothing like Las Vegas, but nice for a short getaway. Or, there is Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods in Connecticut, also gambling destination resorts.

Ruffian%26#39;s list is wonderful!!! I%26#39;ll just add Florida to the list, if you need to warm yourselves a bit. And, while I%26#39;m not sure of the temperatures in April, Bermuda might be an easy trip too. (I can%26#39;t seem to remember if it%26#39;s stormy then!)

Of the rest, I%26#39;d probably go for Las Vegas! The gambling is secondary... the place itself is a must-see, and from there you can do a side trip to the Grand Canyon. And, unlike many years ago, there are actually some pretty fabulous restaurants there, and great spa services. I admit that I like to gamble, but I personally find Atlantic City pretty much of a dump. I%26#39;ve never been to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun.

Although worthy destinations, unless your intent is to gamble I%26#39;d skip Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. I agree that Atlantic City is sort of run down, although that creates this interesting sort of nostalgia about it, but in the end it%26#39;s depressing.

D.C., Boston, New Orleans are great suggestions.

Chicago might be one for your list. A big, very american city with lots of interesting architecture, lots of american food, and lots of friendly people.

Regarding the previous suggestions, I would say no to AC, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, unless gambling is a priority. I%26#39;d second Washington D.C., Florida, Las Vegas, New Orleans... (Go south, get warm!) In addition, although it%26#39;s NW, it%26#39;d suggest Niagara Falls. Fly into Buffalo or Toronto. Go to Canadian side - really a treat.

thanks so much for all your suggestions. We%26#39;re not gamblers, not enough money!!! Are internal flights cheaper to buy in US rather than trying to book from here in UK before we go? Also the comments about going somewhere warm. Does that mean we need winter woollies for our April visit?

Boston! A fantastic city with lots to do and see. Some great history there. Good restaurants. Shopping! have fun!

April in NY can be beautiful Spring-like weather (50%26#39;s or even 60%26#39;s), or it can be cold Winter-like weather. A couple of years back, we had a major snow storm on April 15th. (I remember because I had to cancel a private party I was hosting that required people traveling to the event.) You would definitely need to bring coats, preferably layers (because it may very well be warm during the day and cold at night). Regarding booking airfare, I suggest you decide where you%26#39;re going prior, and if airfare is necessary book in advance. I know that the airlines charge a fortune if you haven%26#39;t booked a week or 10 days before travel. Mind you, if you decide to go to Washington D.C. or Boston, you can take the Amtrak train right from Port Authority, NYC. I%26#39;d also suggest buying your train tickets ahead of time (amtrak.com), you%26#39;ll want a ';reserved train'; so you are guaranteed seats. One more thing, keep in mind that if you chose Boston or Niagara Falls, it%26#39;s colder there than in NYC. Washington D.C. would be warmer, obviously, because it%26#39;s south. Florida would be beach weather, probably in the 80s. Write back if you have any more questions, or if you want to know where to go in Florida. (I can help you with that because I have family down there and I go often...)
