Hi Kelly,

thanks a lot for your help. I would like to know what can we do in NYC those times for free?

How much does it cost for the metro ticket and is there any plan for one day pass or something like that?

thanks!

Hi Paris, when will you be in NY? If it is in the warmer months, just walking around and exploring is free of course. You can hit Central Park. Go down to the South Street Seaport. You can usually find a ';street jam'; around museums, Times Square, high traffic areas etc. In addition, I believe the major museums ask for a ';suggested donation'; but I don%26#39;t think its that much. You may want to start a thread here on this site for information about a city pass. I%26#39;ve never used one b/c I don%26#39;t ';vacation'; in NY, we just pop in and out, but I think a city pass is like $50 and gets you into an unlimited number of major attractions around the city and is good for like a week or so.

As far as the subway goes, for about $24 you can get a 7 day pass to travel any subway or bus an unlimited amount of times. Each trip is $1.50, and you will probablly use the subways extensively so even if you are not there for 7 days, if you do the math you hit $24 after 16 trips and you can easily get on the subway 4 or 5 times a day especially if your stay is short and you are jam packing your days.

You should be safe at night, but as in any big city just be aware of your surroundings. Don%26#39;t walk alone late at night and if you happen to be on the subways really late at night, sit up front in the car where the driver is. If you plan to party late into the night you may want to find a pub or club near your hotel so you can hit a cab for a few bucks in case you have too much to drink. That way you don%26#39;t have to worry about walking or taking a subway. NY is an all night city, especially as the weather begins to get warmer, so its generally safe in the mid-town area. Also, we do have the finest police department in the world (in my humble opionion.) But then my husband is a NYPD officer. :-) Feel free to contact me with any more questions. And if I don%26#39;t know the answers, I%26#39;m sure someone here does.

During the summer months, there are many free events, such as SHakespeare in Central Park %26amp; free symphony concerts in the park, too, besides free tours %26amp; events...www.centralpark.org. The Hudson River Park Trust runs many free events, including movies %26amp; concerts, all along the Hudson River waterfront, and they have done a great job in revitalizing it.

check www.hudsonriverparttrust.org.

There are free events at the World Financial Center, downtown Manhattan, and concerts at Battery Park. The list goes on and on. Take the free Staten Island Ferry for great views of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan. As the previous poster said, you do not have to give the requested ';donation'; but a small amount will suffice. Go visit some of the area beaches, such as Coney Island, for a glimpse into NYC past, where the locals go. Grand Central Station, Penn Station, Times Square all offer tours for free. If you like art, wander through Chelsea %26amp; Soho and visit many small, intimate galleries. There are always street fairs going on, and you never know what bargains you will find (although a lot if it is junk).

The weekly metrocard, which gives you unlimited use of the buses %26amp; subways for 7 days, is going up to $26.00, but it is a bargain. The per trip fare is $2.00, with a 2 hour transfer window from bus to bus, bus to subway, or subway to bus. Or, you can just walk, as NYC is a walking city. Hang out at Union Square or Washington Sq Parks, always street performers and things happening, free lectures at the main public libarary @42nd %26amp; 5th Avenue, free movies at Bryant Park every Monday night (I think it%26#39;s Mondays). Anyway, lots to do %26amp; see.
