NYC - Belvedere hotel - worth staying at ?

We%26#39;re planning to visit New York City in the summer, 2 adults and a 10yo boy.

From what we%26#39;ve read we%26#39;re thinking of staying at the Belvedere.

Can anyone tell us anything about:

a) does it have a bar at the hotel open at night (the info doesn%26#39;t seem to be very specific on this point)

b) what the immediate vicinity of the hotel is like ? Safe ? Residential/commercial/shops/offices ? Bars ? Restaurants ? Sights ? What is within walking distance ?

Don%26#39;t know about the hotel bar, but I do know that this hotel gets consistently great ratings, is on a nice residential street 2 blocks from Times Square and is within walking distance to many area attractions. It is very safe, there are too many restaurants to name with a few block radius, you can%26#39;t go wrong here.

I asked the same question as I have booked the hotel in May

There is no bar at the Belvedere. It is very close to Times Square, Restaurant Row, and lots of shops and bars. Within walking distance of Rockefeller Center, Fifth Ave., Central Park, Grand Central. The street it%26#39;s on is quiet, seems almost residential, with a school just across the street.

Although there is not a bar, does it have a lounge area ? Or at least somewhere to sit and read/whatever of an evening ?

No bar or communal areas other than the large lobby, internet and phone area and comfortable (showy even) breakfast room. Brazilian restaurant is part of the hotel; strange that you can smell the food, hear the people but can only get to it by walking round the block. Reception didn%26#39;t have a menu for us to look at. But the rooms are big and comfy. Times square is your local area; a bit futher but still walkable is the meatpacking area, an off putting name for an interesting offbeat and civilised area with restaurants etc. There are half a dozen decent looking places within 300 yards. We ate at the Pigalleand had a good (French!) meal. Any 10 year old ( going on 50) will be interested in the Intrepid Aircraft Carrier and Concorde which are at the end of the street about 3/4 mile away. Fire station 200 yards away. Got back a few days ago and would thoroughly recommend the hotel.

There is no bar in the hotel, but there is an Irish bar, Hurleys just a couple of 100 yards away in the direction of Times Square, not far to walk home to. It is a very safe street, my husband and I walked it lots of nights after 2am. Also very quiet, there is a fire station at the corner of the block which I am sure the 10 year old would enjoy seeing, the firemen seemed more than happy to show people around any time we were passing. Everything is within walking distance, Empire State Buildng, Times Square, Central Park or if you dont feel like walking subway is about 5 min walk from hotel. would definately recommend this hotel.

Thanks for all the comments. Exactly the helpful information I was hoping for.

i stayed at the belvedere in january!! it was a great hotel very well priced with lovely staff!! there is no bar but we found a cheap liquor store jus round the corner so bought some drinks for our ';getting ready time'; really reccommend this hotel as its so close to all the action

My wife and I stayed at the Belvedere in July 2003, and we will be returning to it this Summer. In my opinion, it is an outstanding hotel for the money.

There is no bar in the hotel. There is a very nice lobby with some seating, but I don%26#39;t remember there being a public lounge other than the breakfast room, which I believe is closed at other times of the day. Although it is a reasonably nice hotel, it doesn%26#39;t offer much in the way of public areas.

There are a number of bars and restaurants in the area, including a nice Italian place where we ate lunch one day. The hotel is about a block and a half away from the north end of Times Square, with Eighth Ave. half a block the other direction. There are plenty of delis, etc. within walking distance, and the neighborhood is very safe. There is also a subway station about a block away.

The back of the Belvedere connects to a Brazilian steakhouse - its main entrance is actually around the block. I would highly recommend trying it if you%26#39;re feeling carnivorous - it%26#39;s all you can eat of about eight different kinds of meat, along with an incredible salad bar. We had an outstanding dinner there.

If you don%26#39;t mind my asking, when are you planning to be there?
