Recommendations for SOHO/Greenwich Village

When my husband and I are in New York in March, we would like to spend a few hours walking through these neighbourhoods on a Friday afternoon. Any suggestions as to must-sees or streets to walk? Also, should we walk from the Financial District (which we%26#39;ll be visiting in the morning) or take the subway to SOHO? Thanks!!!

Recommendations for SOHO/Greenwich Village

There are several good walking guides to NYC available. I found the National Geographic Traveler New York to be good. It describes walks, with maps, in Greenwich Village and SOHO, as well as other areas of the city.

Also

City Walks: New York: 50 Adventures on Foot. This one has many more walks, but not as detailed descriptionsl:

Both of these are available at Amazon.com

Recommendations for SOHO/Greenwich Village

For a quick walking tour with minimal research.

(I do this walk every day in the spring summer as it is basically my office to my apartment)

Start at Battery Park, or somewhere in the financial district. Try to be empty handed because youre going to wind up doing some shopping along the way.

Head North along broadway for about 2 and a half miles all the way until you reach Union Square.

This walk takes you through the financial district, tribeca, chinatown, soho and greenwich village. End the walk with a nice lunch at the ';Coffee Shop'; on Union Sq. West.

If done quickly, the walk can take 30 minutes. You%26#39;ll obviously walk at a much slower pace.

A reccomended detour:

Turn left on Bleecker. Follow it into the west village. Lots of interesting buildings, narrow streets, good history, plus some very fun and trendy shops, cafes and bars.

When heading back to Broadway, make a left on University Place instead and follow that to Union Sq.

Anyone care to add to this?

I%26#39;ll happily provide more specifc details if you like, just let me know.

Thanks for the suggestions! Which would be the best street for shops in SOHO? I%26#39;m most interested in NON-chain stores.

Dear Pfish,

During my stay I also plan on seeing a bit of Greenwich Village. How far up Bleeker do you suggest going? We were going to begin our walk around Washington Square, south on Sullivan north/west on Bleeker and then wherever our feet take us until dinner. We were planning on La Scatolina Tuesday night. Then walk up to Union Square after dinner and back to the hotel.

sp. Bleecker, sorry

I think we%26#39;ll have to plan to have dinner in or around the Village - any recommendations on good steak in the area?

A good place for shopping in Soho is West Broadway. Lots of unique shops, few chains. For dinner in the Village in a really funky spot, try Chez Michallett on the corner of Bedford and Grove. Tiny French-style bistro. Candle lit. Quiet. Only 12 tables. Very romantic. Edith Piaf music in the background. I had the Steak au Poivre with pommes frites and it was delicious. Escargots was a great appetizer. Super dessert menu. Nice wine list. You%26#39;ll need a reservation on weekends.

Hey PHxtoNYC.

Take the 6 train to Bleecker Street and start walking from there. Turn north to Washington Sq. park (have lunch at the store that only sells PB%26amp;J sandwiches) and then go back to Bleecker. Keep heading west. The Far West village is gorgeous.

In SoHo, try West Broadway (the main drag) and Broome Street
