Are there beaches around NYC?

I%26#39;m going to NYC this summer. Could you please recommend a nice beach near NYC? I%26#39;m looking for one that%26#39;s about 1-2 hours (max) driving. It would be great too that there are hotels, pubs and night clubs around the area. Thanks!

Are there beaches around NYC?

Having lived in Manhattan and Queens for many years, I know that many New Yorkers spend summers in The Hamptons and Fire Island. I, however, being ';a Jersey girl';, always ventured back to my home state ';to go down the shore.'; (New Yorkers go to the beach; Jerseans go down the shore.) I could give you lots of advice about the Jersey shore, the closest beaches being about 1 1/2 hours from NYC. NJ shore towns have lots to offer - boardwalks filled with rides and wheels of chance, gorgeous beaches, reasonable prices. Sorry, I can%26#39;t tell you much about where to go in the Hamptons or FI. Write back on the Jersey forum if you want further info on the Jersey shore.

Robert Moses State Park is on the Western-most tip of Fire Island and, unlike the rest of FI, there is a bridge that connects it to the rest of Long Island. It is an easy (90 min.) day trip and is a really beautiful beach. If you%26#39;re looking to spend a couple of days at the beach, Montauk Point is hard to beat, 2 1/2 hrs. from NYC . There are lots of hotels. pubs, etc. in town. MontaukChamber.com is an excellent web site. A little closer (2 hrs.) are the Hamptons. More night life, more shopping, more expensive, more pretentious. Depends what you%26#39;re looking for. The Hamptons are very upscale, Montauk is more fishing village. Both share the same beautiful shoreline.

I%26#39;m a life long New Yorker and have lived on Long Island for over 35 years. I have travelled to some of the best beach spots in the U.S. including Hawaii, Florida, Texas and California. I can confidently say that some of the best beaches in the country are located on Long Island (the South Shore, being on the Atlantic ocean is better than the North Shore). We don%26#39;t have the scenery of Hawaii or the sunshine of Florida or the oil slicks of Texas but the variety of great beaches makes up for those shortcomings. I would recommend Fire Island which has numerous beaches to appeal to any interest from family friendly, singles, clothing optional or alternate lifestyle (usually gay or lesbian). Check out www.fireislandbeaches.com for lots of info. For family friendly I would recommend Robert Moses (via Robert Moses Causeway) or Sunken Forest (accessible by ferry from Sayville (www.sayvilleferry.com), for a gay beach go to Cherry Grove or Fire Island Pines via same ferry service.
