We are planning our first trip to NYC and I was wondering if anyone knows how much it costs to do the subways, and also are they safe for the most part? Is there any neighborhoods in Manhatten where you should NOT be at night??
subways and safety??
Single rides are $2 each. The best deal is the Fun Pass which gives you unlimited bus or subway rides for one day for $7. You can buy these from the machines in most subway stations or anywhere Metro cards are sold. I%26#39;ve been visiting the city for 25 years, with and without kids, and have always found the subways safe. The bus lets you see more of the city, but it%26#39;s slower. At 2 am I took the bus from the Village to midtown and it was like having my own taxi. If you exercise the same common sense you would in any large city, you%26#39;ll be fine.
subways and safety??
Subways are much safer than they used to be, however, be aware of your surroundings, don%26#39;t flash much jewelery and use common sense. There are maps in every car but get the pocket map. Know your route before entering the subway and try to stay in the middle of the train (usually arrives near a token booth and you may be near a conductor). The neighborhoods in Manhatten where you should not be are probably ones you won%26#39;t be in any way. In other words, if you stick to the tourist areas and popular spots, you shouldn%26#39;t have any problem at all. The subways are the quickest way to get anywhere in NYC. I would recomment doing what I did as a kid and still like to do: go to the first car and look out the front window on the front door (you have to cup your hands around your face). Great view although you can%26#39;t do this with the newer cars.
Agreed with BGenn---don%26#39;t wear flashy jewelry or anything expensive that draws attention to you and you will be fine. I%26#39;ve ridden the NYC subways for years, even in the mid 70s when the city was going broke and had all kinds of problems and never once did anyone bother me. The idea of going into the front car and looking out the window is a great idea. I used to do that as a kid growing in the Boston %26#39;burbs. I used to think that it was the neatest thing LOL!
