I am travelling with a friend to New York on Easter weekend. We are staying with one of her relatives in Staten Island. We will probably want to spend most of our time in Manhattan. Is Staten Island really out of the way? Should we plan on getting a hotel in the city for a night or two? Also, any suggestions on where to go that might now be the typical tourist spots?
First trip to New York
Get a hotel for a night or two. I don%26#39;t know what time the Staten Island Ferry stops running at night, but having to go back and forth over and over would waste valuable time. If you want to stay away from touristy things, steer clear of Times Square. Actually, no, you should experience Time Square and the Theatre District, but once you%26#39;ve done it? Leave it.

If you want to save a hotel bill of about $200 and up (after taxes), SI would be a good way to go. You can commute to and from the City by ferry, not a bad way to go. The only problem would be if you want to experience the nightlife. I think the commute would be difficult late in the evening. Bottom line: If you%26#39;d be content to spend days in Manhattan, and hang out in SI at night, you%26#39;d be OK. Otherwise, spring for a hotel on the nights you want to stay late.
Thanks. My friend and I are in our mid-20s and are definitely interested in experiencing the nightlife. What area would be good to stay in for a night or two that would be close to the action?
I suggest the Meatpacking District and the Lower East Side for trendy/hip. Bleecker Street for the college scene. There are also some good clubs in Chelsea. Check out this site: sheckys.com.
I%26#39;m a bit older than you (mid-forties), married, moved out to the suburbs (NJ) with 2 kids. But when I was single in the city, it went this way: Columbus Ave. on the Upper West Side (mainly the 70%26#39;s and low 80%26#39;s) was great for bar hopping. Also, on the Upper East Side, 1st Ave. in the high 60%26#39;s and 70%26#39;s had a lot of ';singles bars';. Then there were the nightclubs, mainly downtown. Don%26#39;t ask me what%26#39;s ';hot'; now, I couldn%26#39;t tell you. Why don%26#39;t you post a new question re: where to party?!! Then you can go on tripadvisor hotel reviews and find a hotel that%26#39;s recommended in the area you want to be in.
Consider taking a taxi home to SI after late night partying, it%26#39;ll be much cheaper then a hotel in Manhattan ($50-$70??) versus $200...
Hi
My wife and I went to NYC for the first time in July last year and we stayed there for about 1 week. We stayed at Hotel Thirty Thirty and were pretty satisfied with that. I have posted a trip report with pictures on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com. Maybe you can find some useful information there :-) Have a great trip
Regards
Gard
