The more we research and plan our upcoming itinerary the more we are venturing out of our Mid-town Broadway area. Are there certain ';general'; areas we should perhaps avoid? We have a Broadway show every night so we will probably not be going too far after hours.
Areas in NYC to avoid?I%26#39;ve walked Manhattan everywhere up to the 100 blocks on the upper east and west side and never had a scary moment. Best neighborhoods I%26#39;ve traveled are the Upper East and West Sides. The Village is also worth a visit. New York is very safe. That said, use sensible street safety precautions and don%26#39;t visit dark and empty streets where no cab goes late at night. You will love New York. Let us know how your trip went when you return.
Areas in NYC to avoid? In general, very far west in midtown (10th and 11th Avenues) should be avoided. Nothing much there, mostly warehouses and parking garages. Also, don%26#39;t go too far uptown. I used to live at 97th and Columbus (an OK neighborhood), but if I walked 2 blocks uptown, I didn%26#39;t feel safe. Same with the Upper East Side, I%26#39;d try to stay in the 90%26#39;s through 40%26#39;s. Regarding the Empire State Building area (34th and 5th), that%26#39;s fine, and you can go over to Macy%26#39;s (34th %26amp; B%26#39;way), but I wouldn%26#39;t go west of B%26#39;way in the 30%26#39;s. Gets a little seedy. Downtown, concentrate on neighborhoods - Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Soho, Little Italy, Chinatown. My advice is to get a good map and know where you are.
I also want to add that I too think you will love NY. It%26#39;s a wonderful city! During the day, actually, I think you can walk anywhere!
Thanks for the information. One place we would like to go but it may be too far west 511 W. 22nd St., between 10th and 11th ave, (The Wild Lily Tea Room). Is this area safe? I thought it may be part of Chelsea but wasnt certain.
It%26#39;s as safe as anywhere else in Manhattan and it is indeed in Chelsea.
Ejam%26#39;s mental map seems out of date to me.
ejan
whats the area of united nation like as i am in a hotel right near there
many thanks
As long as there are lots of people around you, and there usually are in manhattan, you are for the most part safe. The areas ejan mentions have very little or nothing to see in them (compared to other neighborhoods) anyway so you%26#39;re not missing anything...
I agree with mistress. The reasons the areas I mentioned should be avoided after dark is because there%26#39;s nothing much there, and would tend to be desolate. In regard to 22nd (bet. 10th %26amp; 11th), yes that is Chelsea. I had been talking about midtown 30%26#39;s, 40%26#39;s, 50%26#39;s, bet. 10th %26amp; 11th. The area of the U.N. (1st Ave %26amp; 46th St.) should be plenty safe because of all the security. However, it%26#39;s not really ';a neighborhood'; - not much there to explore other than the U.N. You can take a crosstown bus to the west side and be right in the center of the theatre district, head uptown (by bus, or via Lex. Ave. subway) to the upper east side (the 60%26#39;s, 70%26#39;s %26amp; 80s is very nice from 5th Ave. all the way east to 1st Ave.), or head downtown a little to the very nice Grammercy Park neighborhood (22nd - 17th, bet. 2nd and Park Ave. S.).
I want to add one more thing. After your Broadway show one night, if you want to stay out... I%26#39;d suggest walking uptown, along Central Park West (you can walk on the side of the street with all the doorman buildings). It%26#39;s really beautiful there at night. Check out Tavern on the Green, all lit up, (I think at 66th and Central Park West), then cut over 1 block to Columbus Ave. There%26#39;s a lot of nightlife there, and you%26#39;re away from the touristy crowds of midtown. In fact, you may want to eat a late dinner after the show. There%26#39;s a huge choice of great restaurants on Columbus Ave. or Broadway on the upper west side.
Ejan-I think we will take your suggestion and venture out after the show. Any suggestions for a late, moderately priced (under $20 a plate), restaurant or ideas for an after show dessert? I know $20 isn%26#39;t much for a NYC meal but we are more ';Show, shopping, dessert'; girls so we decided to try to excercise a little meal frugality.
Thanks again!
Dear IowaTraveler - There are so many restaurants on Columbus Ave. The only names I could think of are Empire Szechuan at Columbus and 69th (great Chinese, inexpensive) and Dallas BBQ Ribs at 72nd St. bet. Columbus %26amp; Central Park West (fantastic ribs %26amp; wings, huge frozen drinks), also not expensive. If you post another question re: where to eat on the Upper West Side, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll get lots of responses! Best wishes, and have fun!
