How long to clear customs?

Hi All

I%26#39;m sorry if this has been asked before, but how long should we expect it to take to clear customs at JFK at around 4pm on a Thursday. I realise this might be a ';how long is a piece of string'; question, but I%26#39;d welcome your guesstimates!

if your flights on time etc takes apparantly an hour as long as everything is in order , you have visa etc if needed[for any conviction]

and then an hour to your hotel you will be there for your evening meal

Based upon my own experience and the many posts from U.K. travelers, it really seems to depend upon what time you arrive, how busy it is (number of other international flights arriving at the same time), how many of the counters are manned and the inspector you get. I%26#39;ve heard of some people clearing in 35 minutes and others have required 1-1/2 hours.

Thanks for the info - that%26#39;s helpful. We%26#39;d hoped to get earlier flights, but the ones we got were such a good deal it seemed stupied to pay more to arrive a couple of hours earlier.
