Hi,
My husband and I are going to a Yankees game for the first time, since we don%26#39;t know baseball-games in Belgium...
The game is on at 7:05 pm on a Wednesday-night so was wondering, what about dinner? Do we eat before or after the game. If we%26#39;d eat afterwards, what time would it be? Don%26#39;t know how long the game is on?? Ans where should we eat so late in Manhattan? Joe Allen%26#39;s, is that a good option? Doesn%26#39;t have to be anything fancy...
Thx!
Dinner before or after?
The games usually end about 10:30, but it could be a little eariler or a lot later, depending on how the game is going. Definately eat prior, and if you are hungary after the game, head to Joe Allen for a snack. By the way, the food options at the stadium are not great, mostly junk, and on the expensive side, so you may want to bring some snacks. Do not bring a backpack to the stadium, they do not allow it, but you can carry items in a plastic bag.
Dinner before or after?
A standard game can last from 2-1/2 to sometimes 4 hours. It is the only sport in which there is no clock. What there is, occasionally, is something called ';extra innings.'; That happens when both teams have scored an equal number of runs after 9 innings (the standard length of the game) and thus there is no winner. They have to continue playing until a winner is determined and that could take an additional hour or two or even longer. (I believe that one game actually lasted 26 innings). That means if you remain to the end (and you don%26#39;t have to) you will be starved and have to resort to eating the overpriced, horrible ballpark food.
That%26#39;s just a long way around of telling you to eat before the game. You always know when a game will start. You don%26#39;t always know when it will end.
Also, eat in Manhattan. There are no decent places near the Stadium to eat.
You can%26#39;t just ';pop into'; Joe Allen%26#39;s for a late meal.... the place is packed to the rafters. I%26#39;d suggest having a late lunch, then make a reservation at Joe Allen%26#39;s. Leave the game in time to make dinner.
(It%26#39;s probably obvious that I%26#39;m not a sports fan at all, and I%26#39;d happily walk out on a close game to make dinner on time.)
When we%26#39;ve been to a night game, we%26#39;ve had a late lunch. As we can rarely eat the portions that they serve in NY, two huge meals aren%26#39;t manageable, so after the game we%26#39;ve gone somewhere for a sandwich, or even just a cake. Cafe Lalo on W83rd was great for us as it was so close to where we stayed.
Either. But also, eat DURING the game. I admit it is overpriced, but unless you%26#39;re vegetarian you must have a hotdog at Yankee Stadium! It%26#39;s so american.
Hi Eleanor,
I agree totally with Bettina and I am a huge baseball fan. Eat a really late lunch in Manhattan and then go to the game. It is not necessary to stay for the whole game. The game is divided into 9 innings and after about 7 of them (8:30-9:00PM) you may be ready to come home. But, you will love the history of Yankee Stadium and the wonderful tradition of baseball. After the game you guys will probably be hungry, so stop off at the Carnegie Deli or any of the casual great NY places recommended on this forum.
Just a suggestion.
