I have emailed Amtrak with our concerns re the size of our suitcases and will have to chase them up as no reply so far. We will have 4 full days in New York before leaving for Boston. Can we leave it until we get there to book or will demand be high in mid-July? The Acela express leaving mid-morning is the one we would hope to book on.
Thanks in anticipation
How soon to book train to Boston?
Unless you%26#39;re planning to travel during a holiday time (Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc.). You won%26#39;t have to book very far in advance. Since I see you plan to travel in mid-July, you shouldn%26#39;t have to book this far in advance. However, I would suggest booking at least 2 weeks in advance for the sake of peace of mind. As to suitcases---AMTRAK has a new rule--if your suitcase weighs more than 50 lbs., you won%26#39;t be able to bring it in the car with you. You will have to check it--just like flying.
It%26#39;s very easy to book online. When you get to the train station, you won%26#39;t have to wait in line for your tickets. There are machines that you insert your credit card. Once it reads your card, it will print up your tickets.
Some people will tell you not to take the Acela due to cost. So I%26#39;d like to say that I%26#39;ve taken the Acela and thought it was worth the extra cost---newer trains, more comfortable seats, faster (it stops at fewer stations) and less crowded. Plus, these days it has a good on-time record. In the beginning, they didn%26#39;t have their act together and often ran late.

Give Amtrak some time to respond to your email. It is a government agency and at least three meetings and a memo will be required to respond to your query. I would try to book the Acela before you leave the U.K. Booking from the U.S. only four days in advance is cutting it close.
Hi, we are travelling the opposite way from Boston to NYC. We emailed Amtrak about the luggage space and after 3 responses finally got the correct answer. The luggage rails overhead are 3ft deep so plenty of space for the usual size suitcases. We have booked in advance only because we needed to travel on a certain day and because the exchange rate is so good. Hope this helps.
Thank you for the help. Will give Amtrak awhile longer to respond. Will also have to get suitcases out of storage to check size and weight.
Booked the Acela express online for mid-day on the 21st July to Boston. No reply yet from Amtrak but it looks like suitcases we have will be fine.
If you enjoy good Italian food, when you%26#39;re in Boston you absolutely must go to Sabatino%26#39;s on Washington Street in the North End. It%26#39;s the ultimate family run restaurant. No frills. No ambiance. No decor. Only fresh ingredients (they even make their own sauces). Very reasonable prices. Huge portions. The Veal Saltimbacca is the best I%26#39;ve ever had anywhere. Pasta and seafood dishes are outstanding. Other than the Frank Sinatra music invariably playing in the background, the place is perfect. They%26#39;ll treat you like a member of the family. If you don%26#39;t go early you may have to wait for a table but it%26#39;s worth it.
Also, consider La Summa in the North End. It%26#39;s a family run place. The sauce and pasta are homemade--excellent food!--highly rated in Zagat.
Those restaurants sound just like our type of place. As the other half is Italian he loves the traditional restaurant where the emphasis is on the food and good fresh ingredients. Although last year he did develop a worrying fondness for Denny%26#39;s especially the breakfasts.
Denny%26#39;s, hmmm. . . Well, I have to say Denny%26#39;s does breakfast better than lunch or dinner. We%26#39;ve eaten in our share of Denny%26#39;s when on the road. But, of course, in NYC or Boston you can find much better breakfast than Denny%26#39;s!
