Canal Street
between Church Street and East Broadway
In addition to its role as the major thoroughfare connecting Brooklyn and New Jersey, Canal Street is an amazing open-air bazaar, where you锟斤拷锟絣l find a dizzying array of goods from all over the world. Start your tour at the landmark Post Office at the corner of Church Street, one of New York锟斤拷锟絪 several majestic mail facilities built thanks to Roosevelt锟斤拷锟絪 Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Nearby indoor jewelry stalls compete with vintage army-navy stores across the street. The architecture is a truly bizarre hodgepodge of styles, from the ramshackle, falling-down turn-of-the-last-century tenement house to renovated warehouses. You锟斤拷锟絣l find good deals on sunglasses, luggage, postcards, electronics, computers and videotapes here.
As you travel eastwards, look for odds-and-ends, hardware, rubber and industrial plastics stores. Although you might have no need for vinyl flooring or inner tubes or those hard-to-find vintage doorknobs, definitely peek inside the plastics stores, which feature everything from day-glo sheets of plastic adhesive to human-size Statue of Liberty reproductions. After admiring the weird display of vintage fans in one store window on the south side, cross the street and head into Pearl Paint for its six floors of art supplies. No superlatives here; Pearl really does have everything. Between Centre and Lafayette Streets, examine the huge assortment of fake luxury watches, scarves, perfumes and maybe buy a t-shirt or bracelet. If you锟斤拷锟絩e wondering why some of the dealers keep their most prized goods in attach锟斤拷 cases, it锟斤拷锟絪 because of frequent raids by US Customs and the New York City police targeting dealers in counterfeit items.
Moving into the Chinatown part of Canal Street, you锟斤拷锟絣l find fruit and vegetable stands, fresh fish and Asian grocery stores. Stop in to Maria锟斤拷锟絪 Bakery for some delicious Hong Kong-style baked goods. Visit one of the upscale jewelry stores that sell a huge variety of gold and diamond rings, and stop to admire the ornate, landmark Manhattan Bridge entry at Canal Street and Bowery. Stop in at the interesting Mahayana Buddhist Temple (with a bright yellow fa锟斤拷ade) across the Bowery, or head north or south to visit more of Chinatown. If you cross the Bowery and continue going east on lower Canal Street (where the roadway is both narrower and infinitely more tranquil), you锟斤拷锟絣l be rewarded with a fascinating tour of the Lower East Side, where old-style luncheonettes compete with Chinese restaurants and Asian greengrocers. Enjoy the tour!

Hi
We just loved Canal Street! I bought five LV handbags a purse and two holdalls they all look very posh. Also bought a few watches which are still working ;-) It is a street with lots of shops and lots of people just selling things out of bags. Saturday is the best day to go we went during the week also and was no where near as good as Saturday. My husband loved it!!! Just take the Subway to Canal Street. And happy buying, your daughter will love it. Mainly Handbags watches purses, jewellery and hats.

Not a market. Just a street with lots of vendors. How good are the fakes? It%26#39;s a crapshoot. I%26#39;ve had out of town guests come back from knock-off shopping happy and unhappy. If your daughter isn%26#39;t traveling with you, have her give you a lesson. Inspect one of her real ones and then compare it. Or even BRING it to compare on the spot. You%26#39;ll be able to tell... Oh! and if you do end up buying a fake bag, make sure the fake desinger label is attached. Sometimes they forget to do that.
canal street is really easy to find, least the bit where the little ladies sell the bags are. You just get the subway to canal st station get off and they are all right there!
There are like kiosk type shops and also these little ladies selling them with them all linked on their arms. When we were there the cops came along and they shrugged them into a black sack and dissapeared into the crowds, when the cops went it was arms in bags and off they went again yelling purse purse purse.
the fakes we got were far superior to fakes you get over here. I guess if you had a real one right next to it yes you would be able to tell but not in passing. I had a LV holdall and bag...dont use them now due to the chav factor :( for the americans who dont know what chav means, our chavs are your trailer trash who love fake burberry and LV. MIne have sat in the cupboard for abotu a year now.
I paid 90 dollars for a brown holdall and a bag, not one of the small ones a nice medium sized one. I also got my daughter a white one for 30 dollars and got 3 purses for around 15 dollars each. With the purses unscrew the poppers and put a dab of superglue before screwing them back up!
haggle for a good price but have a look at different sellers/shops for quaility, the quality in the shops was a bit better. We went into lv the day after and had a look at the kind of things we got and it was really hard to tell the difference.
There was also fake watches, all fake lv goods ie belts etc and channel earings etc, thats really all i saw as I got what I want by then and went to the big art shop over the road!!
thanks lovely linda and val %26amp; ian,
this sounds like an amazing place to browze, can%26#39;t wait to go there. won%26#39;t be able to go on a saturday though, is it open on sundays. if not i%26#39;ll definately go during the week.
thanks again
Canal st is my favorite street in the whole world. I am going this sunday and am way too excited. LEt me tell you, I bought a LV watch over a year ago and the battery is still ticking!!
I brought my brother back in October and told him he%26#39;d spend all his money there and he didn%26#39;t want to believe me. Low and behold, my brother went broke!
The only thing I%26#39;m a little sceptical about on Canal st is the perfume/cologne, they claim it is the real thing, I personaly don%26#39;t think they are.
Have fun shopping!
thanks everyone for your great reports on canal st. i also bought fake watches in singapore which lasted a good few years so i%26#39;m really looking forward to this experience. my 18 year daughter is coming with me so we should have lots of fun.
yes it is all open on a sunday as that was the day we went on!! It was very busy ie the streets were thick with people very very busy!
Oh you are so lucky to be going, we were there in November and we have just booked to go back for Chistmas and New Year flying out of Dublin. We arrive on the 23rd Dec so guess where we are going on Christmas Eve. :-) Have a great time !
