Hotel locations

Will be in NY in April and wondering what area of Manhattan is the best location for a hotel. Is there that much difference between staying on the east or west side? Friends have told me that hotels between 42 and 48the street are the best location. Any truth to this? Thanks for any help.

Hotel locations

I have been in NY twice, and have stayed on the upper west side both times and it was fabulous. I plan to go back every year, and only stay in the same area. The Hotel Beacon on Broadway between 74 and 75th was fabulous - you can walk any time of day or night to an endless choice of restaurants or shops. If you want a lot of activity - lights, etc. then between 42nd and 48th is fine, but if you want to go there and see it, but come back to a neighborhood, I highly recommend the upper west side. Other hotels in the area are Excelsior and Lucerne - I%26#39;m sure there are more, but those are the ones I checked when I chose the Beacon.

I suppose it%26#39;s just a matter of personal choice, but I%26#39;ve always found the area you mention, ie midtown/theatre district/Times Square area, the most convenient as so many sights, shows, museums, shops, etc are within walking distance. I stayed once on the Upper West Side and found that okay, but definitely not as handy, especially at night if I%26#39;d been to see a show or something.

The upper west side is my favorite location! It%26#39;s a ';real'; neighborhood as opposed to ';where we keep the tourists!'; Very accessible by public transport. In fact, only one station away, or a 10-minute ride, from Times Square. In addition to the great hotels mentioned, compare reviews for the Belleclaire, Milburn, Newton, On the Ave and Comfort Inn Central Park. Or take a virtual tour on the web site for ';You%26#39;ve Got Mail'; -- www.youvegotmail.com.

Plus, you can walk to Central Park, Riverside Park, the Museum of Natural History/Planetarium, Lincoln Center, Fairway, Zabar%26#39;s and a bazillion great shops and restaurants.
